Starting June 16, tourists visiting the Taj Mahal will be able to enjoy 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi usage. For every additional hour Rs 30 would be charged. The project is a part of the Central government’s ‘digital’ initiative.
According to sources, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has collaborated with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) for this service. The initiative was mulled over in February with BSNL making a presentation before the ASI.Kundan Singh, public relations officer, BSNL, said a team of senior officials from Delhi would visit the Taj to access work done so far.
He also added that Union telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has formally given consent to inaugurate the facility.Free access is provided for only 30 minutes to avoid prolonged stay of tourists inside the monument complex.
Wi-Fi spots will soon be made available at other monuments across the city as well as in a few public places like colleges and railway stations. At present, Agra Cantt railway station is the only place where this facility is available. Fatehpur Sikri fort is next in the pipeline to get this service.
