The full-metal body and glass cover will also likely be absent due to cost issues, and the company is now planning to change the design, the report also claimed. South Korea’s second-largest electronics firm has also been researching super-fast charging, but due to a lack of sophistication it will not be on the next flagship phone either, it added.
The company has instead opted to put in a flat-screen LCD (liquid crystal display) panel, as it has done for previous phones, after its affiliate LG Display told the firm it currently lacks the production capacity to meet demand. LG Display currently produces small-sized OLED panels, most of which are being used on the Apple Watch and LG Electronics’ wristwatch line-ups. It will be difficult to convert them for smartphones right away, the report said. The firm will only be able to produce them starting the second half of next year, aimed for the next-generation iPhones.
Compatriot Samsung has had dual curved OLED for its flagships since the Galaxy S6 Edge, while Apple is reportedly planning to use OLEDs for its next phone as well. LG’s mobile boss Juno Cho initially said the modular concept will continue after the G5 for future phones, but said earlier this month that the company was internally discussing whether they want to apply it to the G6 and have not yet concluded.
