Microsoft specifies which Lumia devices will get Windows 10 on first launch

Microsoft may be intending to get all Lumia devices a Windows 10 update in the future, but not all Lumia devices will get it on first launch. In fact, devices like the 630, 530 and 520 don’t appear to be getting it soon.

According to Microsoft’s product page for Windows 10 on phones, the update is only coming to a specific set of devices at launch, and even then not all recent devices.

Here are the list of devices that will get Windows 10

US “Our newest Lumia smartphones – the Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL and Lumia 430 Dual SIM – will receive a free upgrade to Windows 10″

UK  “The following Lumia smartphones will receive a free upgrade when available: Lumia 435, Lumia 535, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, and Lumia 930.”

Rest of World “Lumia 430, Lumia 435, Lumia 532, Lumia 535, Lumia 540, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, and Lumia 930.”
While the wording for the US did change, we decided to keep the original quote as the revised version was more generic. Most noticeably, the Lumia 530, 520, 630 and 635 are absent from the list despite being the most popular Windows Phone devices. The 1520, Lumia Icon and 730 are also absent despite sharing the same specs as the 930 and 735.

Its likely that Microsoft is just listing the devices that will get the first wave of Windows 10 with other devices coming later as the US website initially specified and that deals with carriers mean that ewer devices are getting the update first. In addition, all Lumia devices are already eligible to run Windows 10 via Windows Insider so even if one doesn’t get the update for Windows 10 via carrier, the Windows Insider app will allow you to get the update for yourself.
