Ringing Bells to ship Freedom 251 smartphone by June 30 for Rs 251

Ringing Bells Pvt. Ltd, makers of the world’s cheapest as well as the most controversial smartphone Freedom 251 on Saturday claimed that they had sent out text messages and e-mails to customers who will be getting their phones by June 30.

In a post shared on their official page on social networking site Facebook, Ringing bells wrote: “Today is a historic day. We have sent out the confirmation SMS/E-mail to the people who will be receiving the Freedom251 phones by 30th June through Cash on Delivery.”“Kindly like the post and comment here as and when you receive the SMS/E-mail,” the message read.

Quite a few users have commented on the post confirming that they have indeed received a SMS from the company with the order number and delivery promised by June 30. That said, there are a few users who have commented saying that they haven’t received any SMS or email despite having booked on freedom251.com.

Ringing Bells has been embroiled in controversy ever since the launch of ‘Freedom 251’– the company’s flagship phone last month, promised to be made available at a retail price of only Rs.251.
It distributed some “prototypes” of the product to the media which turned out to be Adcom handsets and it was alleged that the device cannot be offered for less than Rs.2,400. However, the company maintained that the phone was developed “with immense support” from the government.

The company claimed that it had received about seven crore registrations before the payment gateway crashed while it decided to give 25 lakh handsets in the first phase before June 30.

A first information report (FIR) has been registered against Ringing Bell’s managing director Mohit Goel and president Ashok Chaddha under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Amid all the controversies, Ringing Bells maintains that there is nothing shady about its operations and it is ready to co-operate with all investigations. In fact, the company has said that it plans to import 50 lakh units of the smartphone, and make Rs 31 profit on each of them.

The Ringing Bells Freedom 251 is now set to be delivered by June end. We will wait to see if the Noida-based company stays true to its word
