WhatsApp will stop working on millions of older devices by the end of the year. The report quotes a WhatsApp spokesperson: “While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they do not offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future. As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use.”
Your go-to messaging app might soon be unsupported by your phone if you haven’t upgraded in a while. For iPhone users, WhatsApp is said to stop working on iPhone 3GS or lower, as well as any device running iOS 6 or lower. On the Android side of things, phones running Android 2.2 Froyo or lower will no longer be supported after the year ends. Windows users running Windows 7 or lower will also meet the same fate.
That said, the company is extending support for BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, Nokia S40 and Nokia Symbian S60 until June 30th, 2017.
