Reliance may extend Jio Welcome offer till March 2017

Reliance has rolled out its Jio services to all users starting September 5 Now according to analysts Reliance may extend its free ‘welcome offer’ beyond December to March end 2017 to meet 100 million subscriber target

“Mass scale-free welcome offer could continue until March 2017 to attract subscriber growth towards the celebrated 100 million mark with RJio’s indicative data pricing at Rs 130-140 per gigabyte (GB),” Motilal Oswal analysts in a note said.

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s telecom business Jio however recently claimed that it had boarded 16 million customers on to its network in less than a month, after a commercial foray on September 5, 2016.The Mumbai-based telco already expressed that it might further drag ongoing free offer if the interconnection issue with incumbent operators would not resolve.

New subscribers latching to Jio’s network are finding it difficult to make calls, except data services which are activated within 120-minutes of Adhaar-based e-KYC activation.

Reliance Industries Ltd. management has said that there are no restrictions on the number of promotional offers a telecom operator can offer. According to TRAI’s guidelines, a company can only run a promotional offer for 90 days, which in Jio’s case ends on December 3rd as it launched the services on September 5th. However, there’s no rule on how many times a company can run any promotional offer.

Reliance Jio’s Welcome Offer includes a free SIM, unlimited data (FUP of 4GB per day), unlimited voice calls, messages, and access to Jio’s premium app suite. The company is facing issues with rival telcos for a lack of enough interconnect points to handle calls on its network. Recently, TRAI found the incumbent operators guilty of blocking Reliance Jio calls, and recommended a fine of Rs 3,050 crores.

Jio is looking to begin charging its customers once the company’s services are glitch-free. Anshuman Thakur, head of strategy and planning at Reliance Jio, said, “We have told Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) and government that customers have faced issues with regard to the quality of service due to the interconnection congestion and they have not been able to enjoy the services that they deserve and what we want to deliver to them. And till we are in a position where we can deliver the quality of service as desired by the Jio management, it will be unfair to charge the customer.”

Reliance Jio had earlier stated that its free 4G Jio Welcome Offer would be limited until December 3 to new subscribers. Existing customers can continue using the free Jio Welcome Offer until the 31st of the month.
