Xiaomi, which currently has only one wearable tech product on the market – the Mi Band, was the second-largest wearable vendor in the first quarter of the ongoing year, according to a latest report by market research firm IDC.The Chinese company shipped a total of 2.8 million units of the wearable in the quarter, capturing a 24.6% market share.
According to IDC, Fitbit was the largest wearable vendor during the first quarter of the year, having shipped 3.9 million wearable devices during the time period, up from just 1.7 million devices a year before. That translates into a market share of 34.2 percent, down from 44.7 percent back in Q1 2014, when the wearable device market was still in its infancy, with much fewer players aiming to compete in it.
Xiaomi takes the second place, with 2.8 million units shipped in Q1 2015 and a market share of 24.6 percent. Xiaomi’s position in these rankings is fairly interesting, given that the company currently sells a single wearable device, the $15 Mi Band.
Samsung grabbed the fourth place in IDC’s rankings, and is estimated to have shipped 0.6 million units during the first quarter of the year. Samsung is the only Android Wear smartwatch manufacturer in the top five. At this point, it’s worth mentioning that Samsung currently makes six smartwatches, but just one of them – the Gear Live – uses Android Wear, the rest being based on Tizen.
With the Apple Watch launched this past April, future rankings will probably look very different. Apple has yet to disclose the number of units that it has shipped thus far, but we’ll be very surprised if the company doesn’t jump straight to the first place in these rankings the next time around.
The first position was claimed by Fitbit, which shipped a total of 3.9 million units and captured 34.2% share of the market. Garmin, Samsung, and Jawbone rounded up the top five with 6.1, 5.3, and 4.4% share. Overall, a total of 11.4 million wearable devices were shipped in the first quarter of 2015, up from the 3.8 million wearables shipped in the year-ago quarter.
